Thanks to the camaraderie of fellow photographers—Mike, Andrew, Becky and Alan—our 2023 Venice course became more than just a workshop; it transformed into an unforgettable experience.
A Photographer’s Paradise
Venice, a city like no other, unfolded before our lenses. Its many alleys, hidden squares, and secret corners beckoned us to explore. We wandered through the quieter neighbourhoods, capturing laundry hanging from windows, reflections in tranquil canals, and the vibrant colours of crumbling facades. Each frame told a story—here are a few images from our trip.

With its labyrinth of canals, historic architecture, and vibrant culture, Venice is a photographer’s paradise. Here are some of the best spots to capture the magic of this enchanting city:
- Piazza San Marco (St. Mark’s Square):
- The heart of Venice, Piazza San Marco, offers a stunning blend of architectural marvels. Frame the St. Mark’s Basilica, the Campanile di San Marco, and the bustling square itself. Early mornings or late evenings provide the best light.
- Rialto Bridge:
- As Venice’s oldest bridge, the Rialto Bridge spans the Grand Canal. Capture its elegant arches, the gondolas gliding beneath, and the vibrant market stalls lining its sides.
- The Grand Canal:
- Venice’s main waterway is a photographer’s dream. Hop on a vaporetto (water bus) for unique perspectives. The palazzos, bridges, and reflections on the water create magical compositions.
- Burano Island:
- A short boat ride away, Burano is known for its colorful houses. Wander the narrow streets, photograph the vibrant facades, and lose yourself in this painterly village.
- The Gondolas of Venice:
- These iconic symbols of Venice are irresistible. Capture them against the backdrop of historic buildings or framed by picturesque bridges.
- Campanile Di San Marco:
- Climb the St. Mark’s Campanile for panoramic views of the lagoon.
- Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale):
- This architectural marvel on the waterfront is a masterpiece. Capture its intricate details and play of light.
- Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri):
- The Bridge of Sighs connects the Doge’s Palace to the New Prison. Its romantic arches and history make it a compelling subject.
